PURPOSE

ISSUE:

This tool was created to support the continued engagement of students and alumni in community-based social change.


GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:

The goal of this tool is to increase the likelihood that students and alumni will continue to be engaged in their communities following civic engagement experiences at Portland State University.


DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY:

This tool is used to provide an offering of the resources at Portland State University to support continued engagement and to frame the end of our community-based general education courses as a beginning of lifetime of community-based social change rather than as the end of a course. It is an example of service learning that puts theory into practice.

MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:

The resource guide presents (1) the conceptual understanding of sustained participation in social change work (as outlined above) and (2) resources for engagement beyond the university. The resources include community organizations, internship opportunities, opportunities for further training, participation in elements of this program, etc. (all available on the website socialchange.pdx.edu).

ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:

Among other things we assess and have found that the resources we offer support students finding skills that support their continued engagement in social change.

LESSONS LEARNED:

Warm aesthetics are inviting and encourage engagement with the piece, the current version reflects this lesson learned.

Printing resources are need as well as funds to create an institution-specific version of this that connects to relevant resources.
