PURPOSE

ISSUE:

The success of two-year students through the use of unique intrusive advising methodology.


GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:

Increasing the success of two-year students.


DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY:

Students who receive intrusive advising, in the form of multiple meetings/interventions, from an advisor who is also one of their instructors, have higher levels of success.

MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:

Students enrolled in the Associate of Science Program in the Fall, 2007 & 2010 (prior to the introduction of intrusive advising) were compared to students in subsequent Fall semesters (after the introduction of intrusive advising).  Average GPA of Associate of Science students


ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:

Student success, as measured by GPA, was significantly higher for those students who received intrusive advising, in the form of multiple meetings/interventions, from an advisor who is also one of their instructors.


IMPACTS:

While there is no single solution to the issue of two-year student success, providing students with intrusive advising, in the form of multiple meetings/interventions, from an advisor who is also one of their instructors, has significant impact on student success.


RESOURCES AND LESSONS LEARNED

LESSONS LEARNED:

Investing time with students by conducting intrusive and labor intensive advising can increase student success.


RESOURCES AND COSTS NEEDED:

RESOURCES NEEDED

Faculty who are interested in and willing to do the labor-intensive work of multiple meetings/interventions with students who are also their advisors in a class they teach.


COSTS

Faculty workload becomes a cost factor when they are also expected to do this intrusive advising.


FUTURE PLANS AND OTHER INFORMATION

FUTURE PLANS:

Expanding to other programs this intrusive advising methodology in which students are in a course in which their instructor is also their advisor.
