Four-Year Institution Size:
To provide effective tools colleges can use to improve student retention rates and better meet student needs.
GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:
The overall retention rate for the school will rise.
The technical institutes in South Dakota have held some of the strongest retention rates in the US; however, we know that what worked in the past does not always continue to be effective. Therefore, we have created this toolkit of retention ideas. The Retention Toolkit has been designed so that institutions can effectively implement only those tools they believe will help them improve their student retention. However, some toolkit items do share common connections and may be more effective when implemented together. The toolkit is developed to provide details on each individual tool along with implementation questions, Southeast Technical Institute’s experiences with implementation, lessons learned, results, handouts, and contact information.
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:The Toolkit is CC BY licensed and can be uploaded to your Learning Management System or reviewed by using the id/password presented above. The package provides several best practices inluding "JumpStart" days, Student Success Seminar, Student Success Center, defining of At-risk students, and The Attendance Challenge to name a few. Each best practice includes it own goals and measures of success. We have created separate pages for each aspect of our retention toolkit. Once you log in, these can be viewed by clicking on the links in the left-hand column. STI will continue to add to the toolkit to provide our grant partners access to the materials we are developing. As we work through the toolkit, we are finding that each area continues to mature and change because of our experiences. We will pass those changes on to you as well. Finally, STI is in the process of gathering data regarding the effectiveness of these tools. You will find results on many of the tools, but we will have more results to share in the future. We hope you find this toolkit useful! Please feel free to add to the blog and share your experiences with these tools or with other tools you have implemented.
