Four-Year Institution Size:
Traditionally, online course offerings were produced as needed rather than programmatically with minimal consistency in delivery or development of course materials.
GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:
-
Improve the consistency, quality and delivery of online courses offered at LCCC.
-
Collaborate with faculty as subject matter experts to build the content
-
Create simple navigation for all courses
-
Standardized course design
The Center for Learning Technologies complied research on best practices for consistent, high quality online course delivery led to the formation of this project. The instructional designers and subject matter experts collaborated to design both online that ensure comparability and consistency in meeting course competencies and learning objectives that mirror LCCC’s face-2-face courses.
* Last updated by: admin on 6/27/2019 @ 11:03 PM * MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:Major Characteristics Development of online course template, peer review completed post development, student survey completed post course completion, revision of course materials or delivery method based on information received from peer review and student surveys.
FEATURES:
Courses are designed using HTML 5 for easy navigation
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
-
Peer review of developed online courses
-
Student surveys delivered post participation in developed online courses.
ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:
IMPACTS:
Students reported an increase in navigating course materials and understanding what is expected of them. Also, the students reported increase in usability and access to the online courses through a variety of tools (e.g. tablets and smartphones) due to the implementation of responsive design during course development (e.g. HTML based).
- We discovered that it took longer than we first thought to develop this model. Once we had the model it needed to be peer reviewed and demonstrated to faculty to get buy in to the process.
-
students loved the ease of navigation
RESOURCES AND COSTS NEEDED:
- Subject Matter Experts, multimedia software and instructional designers
- $54,845
We are currently writing a white paper to propose an online campus where all courses will be developed like this by Instructional Designers with faculty acting as subject matter experts to bring consistency to course design and navigation. We are putting 5 degrees online using this method
