PURPOSE

ISSUE:

The CCCOnline Quality Assurance Program strives to ensure ongoing quality in online courses by assessing instructor participation within courses.

GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:

A quality online course will have efficient design and navigation, will assess and evaluate learning clearly, will provide learner support and resources, will use technology appropriately, and will foster learner engagement and interaction in a community of learning.

DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY:

CCCOnline practices an institutional approach to quality; its Academic Deans, Chairs, Academic Technology, Instructional Design, Student Services, Training, and Quality Assurance Teams work together as courses are built, updated, and taught. The Quality Assurance process focuses specifically on each course’s community of learning and evaluates courses regularly using a set of discussion-based criteria.

MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:

In the Quality Assurance program, all courses are reviewed on a regular basis for ongoing instructor participation. Before the semester, every course is checked for basic readiness. The third week of the semester, new instructors’ courses are checked using the same criteria as the full QA review. From midterm to the end of the semester, courses’ discussions are checked using the Threaded Discussion QA Rubric.

FEATURES:

NA

PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
  • Within the QA Program, quality is checked in course discussions’ instructor presence,
  • timeliness,
  • acknowledgment of learner understanding,
  • engagement,
  • additional posts.

ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:

Quality Assurance reports encourage excellence in online learning through ongoing coaching of student/faculty interaction in the classroom space. The QA program then provides documentation to the Chairs to advise faculty and recognize who needs mentoring and whose courses are exemplary. Further, it encourages consistency across courses.

IMPACTS:

The QA Program generates productive conversation between faculty, Chairs, Deans, the Quality Assurance Coordinator, and the rest of the CCCOnline team regarding ongoing development of courses to meet colleges’ and students’ needs.

RESOURCES AND LESSONS LEARNED

LESSONS LEARNED:

It is critical to communicate the QA expectations to faculty clearly and frequently.

Evaluating every course each semester can be time-consuming if course volume is high. The current system at CCCOnline ensures that each instructor is evaluated once a year.

RESOURCES AND COSTS NEEDED:

RESOURCES NEEDED

Once QA guidelines have been set, an organization would need sufficient communication and training avenues in order to communicate QA expectations to faculty, Chairs, and Deans; an organization also would need an internal system for storing and sharing QA data, as well as sufficient time to perform the quality checks.

COSTS

CCCOnline has a full-time Quality Assurance Coordinator to oversee the QA Program.
