SETTING:
The Data Fellows program champions efforts to engage a diverse group across campus to make more and better use of data and evidence to drive student success.
Appropriate for two-year: Institutions
Two-Year Institution Size:
Appropriate for four-year: Institutions
Four-Year Institution Size:
The program was created to fill an internal need. We had, and have, data-rich pockets on campus, but all users were not necessarily savvy enough to take advantage of the data and ask the right questions. Date need to be tailored to many different unit's needs, and faculty, staff and administrators look at data differently. Data that were being "pushed out" did not necessarily meet users' needs. We are creating a "data pull" environment in which the various units on campus can appropriately target CSULB's graduation rates and achievement gaps.
GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:
- Empower all users of data on campus.
- Create an environment in which users determine the right data to pull, rather than IR pushing out general data to all users.
- Develop a culture in which data are used at the unit level.
- Rigorously assess the success of this project.
- Encourage cross-unit and cross-campus collaboration, while respecting diverse needs and viewpoints.
The Data Fellows program identifies data-interested people across campus; trains them in higher order data management and data accession skills; and trusts them to ask appropriate questions in the broad context of student success. Furthermore, the program encourages and enhances collaboration and problem-solving across units.
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:For much fuller details on the program, its requirements, process, and output, please refer to https://www.csulb.edu/data-fellows for the details.
FEATURES:
NA
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
- Improvement in 4-year graduation rates
- Elimination of acheivement gaps
- Numbers of data-informed campus citizens
ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:
So far, we have identified and trained almost 60 Data Fellows from across the university. Our 4-year graduation rates and achievements gaps have both improved quite dramatically. Our past long-term overall raduation rate was a dismal 16%, and is now just under 30%, while our achievement gaps have shrunk to from 0 to 6%, depending on which groups are compared
IMPACTS:
Increase in studnet success.
- Focus on a widely shared goal (student success, in our case)
- Communicate the intent of the program
- Expect surprises - data often don't show what we "expect"
RESOURCES AND COSTS NEEDED:
RESOURCES NEEDED
Time; space; funding; interest; trust
COSTS
- Training by experts donated by on-campus personnel
- A high-tech classroom for 4 hours weekly
- Minor refreshment budget
- Spend time and effort promoting the project
Continue to roll out the program. Expand opportunities for non-participants to hear about local "discoveries". Disseminate material in journals and conferences.
