The Protocol was created in response to requests from faculty members for help in providing peer review and evaluation of teaching. In addition, UA promotion & tenure dossiers need to include an evaluation of teaching performance.
GOALS / EXPECTATIONS:
The Protocol is provided for use in all UA departments.
The Peer Review of Teaching Protocol is designed to guide instructors in the process of formative review of peers’ teaching, as well as evaluation of teaching for summative review. Formative review is used to provide feedback for professional growth and development; it is usually confidential and non-judgmental and its goal is self-motivated change. Evaluation of teaching (e.g., for annual reviews and P & T) is a more formal process; guidelines for using the Protocol for summative evaluation of teaching are included.
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS:The Peer Review of Teaching Protocol addresses review of both face-to-face and online teaching and includes:
- Guidelines for the instructor being observed
- Guidelines for the observer
- Guidelines for summative evaluation of teaching
- A template for recording notes during a classroom observation
- An Online Course Review Tool
- A customizable Classroom Observation Tool that includes a bank of 82 items addressing various aspects of a class session
- The Classroom Observation Tool includes a template feature that allows UA departments to create an observation template for use across multiple courses.

ACHIEVED OUTCOMES:
The Peer Review of Teaching Protocol has been available since the spring of 2014. As of February 2015, there have been 65 uses of the Classroom Observation Tool and 130 downloads of either tool (Classroom Observation and Online Course Review). The template feature was activated in February 2015.
IMPACTS:
The Protocol is building capacity across campus for faculty members to conduct formative review and summative evaluation of teaching in their departments.
- Availability of the Protocol has provided our upper-level administrators a tool to offer departments in support of evaluating teaching quality.
- Generating widespread use of the Protocol requires continual marketing to instructors and department heads.
- Being open to suggestions for improving the Protocol has made it a better tool.
- Sharing the Protocol with graduate teaching assistants has increased their familiarity with and advocacy for peer review of teaching in their future academic positions.

RESOURCES NEEDED
The Protocol was developed by a UA employee in the Office of Instruction and Assessment (OIA). It was piloted by instructors across the university who volunteered to be observed and give feedback on the Protocol. The Classroom Observation Tool was developed by an OIA programmer.
COSTS
130 days of programming work
We will continue to track Protocol usage and reach out to departments with heavy usage to solicit feedback for improvement of the Protocol.
